The Department of Paediatrics at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and the School of Medicine, University of Limerick (UL) hosted a Paediatric Rheumatology Study Day on Friday, 3 May.

The event was open to all healthcare professionals across the UL hospital group, the Mid-West region and beyond, with options for in-person and virtual attendance. Professor Clodagh O’Gorman, Foundation Chair and Professor of Paediatrics, School of Medicine University of Limerick and Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Endocrinologist, Department of Paediatrics, UHL opened the day. Over 40 people attended the event.   

Dr Kieran Murray, Consultant Rheumatologist at UHL, commenced the day’s events with a talk entitled “Alcohol for Paediatricians”. Dr Bronwyn Power, Paediatric Rheumatologist and General Paediatrician at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, Australia, joined virtually to present on “Musculoskeletal presentations to the General Paediatric service at the Royal Children's Hospital”.

Dr Kathy Gallagher, Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist, Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin spoke about “Dipping your toes in Paediatric Rheumatology” in the morning and delivered case presentations as part of the afternoon’s programme. Dr Siobhán Neville, Associate Professor in Paediatrics, University of Limerick School of Medicine and Consultant Paediatrician, UHL facilitated a Paediatric Poster Walk, allowing local paediatricians-in-training to present their audit, quality improvement, and research projects through lunch.

The afternoon was opened by Ms Karen Peate, Advanced Nurse Practitioner in Paediatric Rheumatology in CHI at Crumlin, presenting on “Medications used in the treatment of Rheumatological diseases in Paediatrics”, followed by Ms Emma Lunney, Senior Occupational Therapist, CHI in Crumlin and Ms Alice O’Hare, Senior Physiotherapist, CHI at Crumlin, speaking about “Physio and OT management of Rheumatology Conditions”.

There was an interactive Question and Answer session at the end of the day, followed by closing comments from Professor Colum Dunne, Head of School, Foundation Chair and Director of Research, School of Medicine University of Limerick.
